Signed from Sharlston in July 1937, winger Percy Butcher had a nightmare debut against Leeds, as Rovers were thrashed and the youngster was ‘out of his depth with some weak tackling against Leeds’ stars’. To his credit though, he improved his play in the reserves and duly received a second chance, which he took. The following season he switched from winger to second-row with some success. Then came World War Two and, like so many other players, Butcher’s career was cut short, he joined the Army and spent the war on active service, rising to the rank of Captain.
