Born at Brotherton, Percy Sutcliffe was playing for Sharlston when he came to Featherstone Rovers for a trial in the Lyon Charity Match in August 1934. He impressed enough to be signed on and turned professional. A solid grafter, he did well enough that year to attract the attentions of other clubs. He then made the unusual move to sign for fledgling London-based club Acton & Willesden and took part in their first ever match. The club lasted only one season and the players were all offered to the Streatham & Mitcham club. Sutcliffe however decided to join another new club formed at Newcastle whose coach Jimmy Williams and secretary Mr. Appleyard were both Featherstone men. Very few players from the local area in the 1930s would have had a rugby league as far flung as Percy Sutcliffe’s.
