Peter Harrison’s rugby career did not begin as a young schoolboy but his interest was triggered by his brother Paul progressing in the game.  He joined Featherstone Juniors and after some impressive displays Rovers signed him.  He found first team opportunities limited, playing in the centre and occasionally in the pack.  At over 6' 1" and 15 stone with youth on his side, Wakefield saw his potential and they agreed a transfer with Featherstone, much to annoyance of Rovers coach Peter Fox who wasn't he even consulted, before the start of the 1971/72 season. 

Given a regular first team place he flourished in his first season at Wakefield using his strength to good effect in both defence and attack.  It brought him to the attention of the county selectors and many good judges were predicting him for top honours. Then tragedy struck in a game against Castleford on Good Friday 1972, a severe knee dislocation and complications in the operation resulted in his leg being amputated 6 days later at the age of 22.  A testimonial fund was opened and there was an overwhelming response from all sections of the game.
