Having played for Manly and Canberra in the NSW Premiership, Phil Carey came over to Featherstone in the Australian off-season to bolster a newly-promoted Featherstone Rovers squad. Unfortunately a combination of niggling injuries and a lack of form meant that Featherstone Rovers failed to see the best of him. He went back to Canberra and had a great season in 1990, lining up alongside Mal Meninga, Laurie Daley, Ricky Stuart et al. as Canberra won their first ever Premiership.
