Utility back Phil Johnson was an outstanding junior who signed for his hometown team Castleford at 17. He played 11 seasons at Wheldon Road before joining Rovers towards the end of his career in 1982 as part of a big money exchange deal with prop Kevin Anderson moving to Castleford. Much was expected from this experienced player but he played one game in the A team before suffering an unfortunate injury which meant he didn't play again that season.

Within a month of his first team debut, his younger brother Peter had also joined Rovers from Castleford. Phil formed Rovers’ first choice half-back partnership with Neil Pickerill for the 1982/3 season under Vince Farrar. Rovers struggled, Farrar lost his job and in came Allan Agar. As our famous 1983 Cup run that season progressed, both halves lost their places. In Johnson’s case, it was a cruel shoulder injury after scoring a try in the Challenge Cup first round win over Batley at Wakefield. This, coupled with the emergence of teenager Alan Banks, saw him out of contention for the rest of the campaign. After the occasional game the following season, he retired.
