In a match programme from September 1957 it was noted that in two seasons since the retirement of Eric Batten, Featherstone Rovers had tried no less than 28 different wingers. Another attempted solution to that problem was the signing that very month of two of the fastest local sprinters, Brian Kinsey and Ray Lancaster. Ray received an early debut in a derby match at Castleford, where he pulled a muscle and spent four months sidelined. That paved the way for Kinsey to show his worth. Lancaster received another brief run in the side in January but then his chance had gone.
