Signed in October 1939 when World War Two had just broken out, Reg Taylor was thrown into the Rovers first team against an exceptionally strong Hunslet side. Taylor was reported to have given “quite a promising display and it was no fault of his that the selectors should ask him to make his debut against such a powerful scrum combination”. And that was it for six years as Reg Taylor joined the Army and fought on active service for the rest of the war. His playing career resumed in September 1946, but within a year or so he had hung up his boots, another player’s career severely restricted by war.
