It was quite a coup when Featherstone Rovers announced the signing of Australian test international Reni Maitua for the 2015 season. A high profile career in the NRL with numerous clubs, notably Canterbury and Parramatta brought him international honours for Australia in 2006, and then with Samoa at the 2013 World Cup. His progress was punctuated by a number of off-field issues which included a two year drugs ban.

When he arrived at Featherstone a little late into the season, he made an immediate impact with his positive attitude and winning mentality. At 33 years old after numerous injuries, he was still a quality player. A big back row forward, he retained the ball handling skills that had seen him operate at stand-off in his younger days. When Rovers failed to make the Super League playoffs and had to settle for the Championship shield, Maitua moved on to Salford and later played for Leigh and Toronto.
