Son of Allan Agar, Richard signed for his hometown club from local junior rugby, without making his first team debut. He made his name as an intelligent organiser and play-maker with a good kicking game at Dewsbury (helping them to the Championship in 2000), Widnes (Championship winners in 2001) and then Rochdale before coming back to Featherstone in 2002 to help a young Rovers team under Andy Kelly. He then enjoyed a long and varied coaching career, including spells as head coach of Hull FC, Wakefield and Leeds in Super League as well as the France national team.
