Richard Gunn played all his junior rugby at Travellers Saints in Featherstone but was a big money buy for Leeds as a teenager. Frustrated by his lack of first team opportunities at Headingley, Gunn came home in 1992 and enjoyed the best rugby of his career at Featherstone Rovers. He was named co-captain by coach Steve Martin, and led by example until a broken ankle sidelined him. The following year he was first choice hooker with Rovers back in the first division, undoubtedly his finest year. The following year, he shared responsibilities with Graham Southernwood. With the advent of summer rugby in 1996, the rest of his career was hampered by hamstring injuries.
