Local winger Richard Marsh signed for Featherstone Rovers as a speedy teenager. After learning his trade at reserve team level, he went on to play 123 first team games over eight seasons. His breakthrough year was 1983/4 after the retirement of Ken Kellett, where he was a mainstay of the team, dividing his appearances between wing and centre. He ended the season as the club’s leading try scorer, albeit with a modest total of ten. When he lost his place through injury, he was prepared to knuckle down in the reserves to win back his spot, a sign of a good club man. He had spells on loan at Huddersfield, Doncaster and Bramley during this period.  When Peter Fox took over as coach in 1987 Featherstone were in the Second Division, he recalled Marsh to the first team. He then picked up a Second Division Championship medal in 1988 after another reliable season in which he missed just three games. When he lost his place the following year to youngsters Paul Newlove and Ian Smales, he drifted out of the professional game.
