From Featherstone Lions to Featherstone Rovers’ first team, Sam Smeaton quickly settled down into life as a professional player. Strong running, hard to tackle and solid in defence he quickly became first choice centre for Daryl Powell’s very successful side. He played in the 2010 Grand final inside winger Zak Hardaker and the following year inside winger Ben Cockayne. All set for a hatrick of finals he suffered a knee injury in training in the week before the 2012 final. What a devastating injury it turned out to be. Smeaton missed the whole of 2013 in rehabilitation, and didn’t reappear in the first team until August 2014. He left Rovers at the end of that year after 88 first team matches, and after a number of different clubs settled at Batley for a few seasons.
