Derek, or Sam Windmill as always he preferred to be known, made his first team debut for Rovers in 1966 and was in and out of the first team for several seasons. He signed for the club in June 1965 from Rovers’ own Under 19s. In this era, prop was a position Featherstone generally had well covered and there was lots of competition for places in the front row. In 1972, Sam transferred to Hull KR for more regular first team rugby and later played at York and Hunslet before moving into coaching.
Initially, he was assistant coach at Bramley but when they disbanded their A team he took over coaching at the Travellers Saints club. In 1982, he joined the coaching staff at Rovers as A team coach alongside Allan Agar and Keith Goulding, and was part of the backroom staff at Wembley in 1983. With the club facing an injury crisis he also made a one-off playing appearance in February 1983 in a game away at Workington.
