Having grown up in Canterbury New Zealand, prop Simon Angell was playing for Christchurch when he was selected for the 1993 New Zealand tour of the UK. He didn't play a test but came back in the RFL's Centenary season to play for Featherstone. He was part of the inaugural Auckland Warriors squad but missed their first season with a broken leg and was recommended to Rovers by their coach at the time John Monie.  He played only a handful of games before he moved onto Salford before returning home.
