Utility back Steve Lay had had a reasonable career at Hunslet and Halifax before joining Leigh when rugby league switched to summer. From there he came to Featherstone, primarily as a full-back with injuries finally beginning to take their toll on veterans Chris Bibb and Carl Gibson. Things didn’t work out though, and Lay failed to stake a claim to the number one shirt. Lay’s utility value made him a decent option as substitute, and he played 18 matches over two years before giving up the sport.
