At the start of the 1938/39 the committee made a big effort to improve the team by signing a raft of new players.  One of the first of these new signings was Thomas Kelly. Signed from Coghlan’s Sports Club in Leeds, he had representative experience with the Yorkshire Junior side  and was selected for the England Junior side though he was unable to accept the invitation to play. He played well in a pre-season friendly against Castleford, and made his debut in the opening day defeat at York, but never played for the first team again.
