Tim Spears’ career started at Castleford, before he found regular first team football at Batley. He came to Featherstone at the same time as Matty Dale in 2009 and spent six seasons offering sterling service in the second row before switching to loose forward. Spears’ game was based around his work-rate, as a willing runner and indefatigable tackler. His annual try tallies were modest but enjoyed an attempt at a Guinness Book of Records entry by scoring one of the fastest tries ever recorded in a pre-season friendly against Wakefield, collecting a knock-on to touch down after seven seconds.

Dale’s departure in 2014 created a gap at 13, from when Spears was increasingly used in that position. He continued to play the same whole-hearted role regardless of the shirt on his back. A popular a committed player, he made the logical move to be appointed club captain in 2014, a role he held for three seasons. He knew no other than to lead by example and extracted every ounce of talent he could through hard work and dedication. He left Featherstone for York at the end of the 2016 season after 201 first team appearances, and when he retired had clocked up over 400 games in the Championship, an admirable role model for lower league players.
