Tommy Crabtree was a local winger whose career took off after the end of World War Two. Signed as a three-quarter, he made his debut at centre, but was then given a run out at scrum-half.  The experiment met with some success as Crabtree had a run at halfback as 1947/47 opened, before losing his spot to Harry Herbert. He ended that year on the wing. From then on, he became a regular fixture on the Rovers’ wing, racking up a reasonable 25 try return from his 90 career matches at a time when Rovers were struggling.  Unfortunately in 1949 he suffered a serious injury, and followed his contemporaries, Jack Higgins and Walt Garner,  into premature retirement from the game.
