Tommy Needham had a brief but controversial career for Featherstone, and his single game in Rovers colours helped to spark the enduring rivalry with neighbours Castleford, even before they entered the league in 1926. Rovers signed Needham in November 1923, he was thrown straight into the first team and helped Rovers beat Bramley on his debut. Castleford appealed against Rovers’ registration of the player, alleging irregularities in the paperwork of the transfer. The RFL found in Castleford’s favour, based on a new by-law that hadn’t been incorporated into the rule book, and his registration for Featherstone was cancelled. Rovers considered themselves hard done by, but Needham’s promising start had come to a rapid end.
