Full-back Tony Allen was signed from Silkstone Rovers at Normanton in November 1951. It took him a year of reserve team rugby to earn a call-up, such was the competitition from the by then veterans Freddie Miller and Jack Blackburn. Then the next generation came through, Keith Goulding, Jack Fennell and Ken Elford, restricting Allen to just 20 games. His final game for Rovers was in the short-lived ITV Trophy, a televised match v Oldham played at Loftus Road, QPR in London. Allen was later placed on the transfer list and then crossed off the players' register in 1957.
