Nephew of Stan, Tony Nicholson signed for Rovers as a teenager and made his way in the A team. Like his Uncle, he had utility value, and this helped him in that, although he only ever started four first team games, he actually played in three different positions. His debut was at Widnes in a midweek fixture at loose forward as a late replacement for Terry Hudson, alongside fellow debutants Chris Welburn and Andrew Mortimer. Later that year at Hull KR, he was at scrum-half, filling in for the ill Deryck Fox. When George Pieniazek took over as coach in 1985, Nicholson received a brief first team recall at second-row, whilst continuing to offer solid service to the A team. A good club man.
