After a string of impressive performances as a trialist in the A team 20 year old Tony Staniforth signed for Rovers in November 1984 from the Hunslet Parkside junior club.  Despite his early promise he never managed to dislodge veterans Bob Spurr and Keith Bell from the first team hooking role in his first few seasons. He then found himself kept out of the first team by New Zealander Trevor Clark. Despite this, he never let the side down when called upon and was notably a member of an injury-hit Rovers side that defeated big spending Castleford at Wheldon Road in the opening game of the 1989/90 season. Tony created the first try with a run from acting half-back and a perfectly weighted kick through which was gathered by Paul Newlove to touchdown, as Rovers went on to record a sensational 22 - 20 victory.
