Part of a crop of youngsters signed from Rovers’ own junior set up in the summer of 1965, Vince Turner quickly got a taste of first team rugby at Featherstone. Drafted into the side for a bank holiday Monday game against Hull while Mick Smith was rested, Turner then spent the rest of the season in impressive form for the reserves. With his chances equally limited the following year by the form of Smith and Dooler in the halves, he was released in the summer of 1967.

The following season Vince along with former team mate Reg Dunning joined the all conquering Ackworth ARLFC coached by former Rovers stalwart Willis Fawley.  Also in the side was future Rovers chairman Bob Ashby.  In another highly successful season Vince helped Ackworth to several trophy wins and qualify for the first round of the Challenge Cup.  They met a powerful Wakefield Trinity side at Belle Vue and were beaten but not disgraced in a 50 - 7 defeat.
