Walter Best was a regular try scorer in the Bradford Northern side during the war years, winning both championship and challenge cup final winners medals.  He moved to Featherstone towards the end of his career in 1948 and was elected the Rovers captain for the 1948/49 season.  It was a surprise in December 1948 when he retired from playing citing that it wasn't possible for him to combine playing with two jobs.  The programme for the Castleford game on 27 December 1948 paid him the following tribute "His gentlemanly behaviour and his scrupulous fairness on and off the field is an example to players and spectators alike."
