Walter Gamble was a local junior player who played his first senior game under the name of "Flynn" and scored two tries on debut against Hull in September 1934.  This was enough for Rovers to sign him on - he was a 19 year old from Castleford who had previously played for Featherstone Supporters.  He went on to be the top try scorer in his only season at the club but that only amounted to 8 tries in a team that was struggling.
