Walt Garner was a local product, signed from Glasshoughton Intermediates, who was thrown into the first team at a young age during World War Two. After starting out as a second-rower, Garner was tried with some success at hooker. Thereafter, he regularly switched between the two positions depending on the necessity of the team. In March 1948 he dislocated his kneecap in a match against Leeds and that injury brought an end to his career prematurely. He was a great loss to the side having played more than 100 games in just four seasons.
