Although his professional career spanned the whole of World War Two, and as such he rarely played ‘regular’ league football, there could be no doubt that Walt Parkin was a quality player in a number of positions. Principally a full-back, he could also fill in across the three quarter line. Like every full-back in his day, Parkin was a capable kicker, in open play and place kicking, and a general reassuring presence at the back. He unfortunately missed Rovers Yorkshire Cup win in 1940 through injury, but rarely missed a match over the next three seasons. An injury set him back in the 1943/44 season when Bill Leake emerged, but when Leake was sold on, Parkin came back to claim the full-back position. As the war finished, a new generation of players came through, Hubert Chapman among them and Parkin’s solid contribution to Rovers’ cause came to an end.
