Signed from Rovers intermediates in October 1954 Walter Ward’s Featherstone career spanned over a decade until he retired in June 1965. At no point in that time could he have considered himself first choice hooker, but he proved himself to be a loyal club servant. The player Ward had to dislodge from the team was Hall of Famer Willis Fawley, and as such, it was only when Fawley was injured for a lengthy period in 1958/9 that Ward got an extended chance. His best year was 1962/2 when a dip in Fawley’s form saw Ward play 26 games, but even then Fawley was brought back for the biggest game, a Challenge Cup semi-final v Wakefield in front of an enormous crowd. Ward’s total of 77 games in 11 years was testament to his loyalty and perseverance.
