Local product Wilf Pearson was introduced into senior football in the 1937/38 season, slotted into the second row and stayed there for four full seasons, through the first half of the war. He became an indispensable figure, and was duly appointed club captain in 1940. His finest hour was skippering the side to their first ever trophy win, the 1940 Yorkshire Cup.
