As a youngster William Hayes played at the Moor End club, from where he had a brief, unsuccessful trial at Castleford. When Charlie Annable left Featherstone for Castleford in January 1932, it was the diminutive Hayes who Rovers turned to in order to fill the gap created at scrum-half. Hayes quickly made the number seven shirt his own, and he struck up a useful partnership with Wilf Evans. As inevitably happened at that time, after almost exactly two years Hayes was transferred to Bradford Northern for a small profit to balance the club’s precarious accounts. It can only be speculated as to how much more successful the club would have been in the 1930s had they been able to hold on to even half of the talented youngsters such as William Hayes who passed through the club.
