With no team expected to dominate the division, this season represented the best opportunity Rovers had to gain promotion to the top flight since 1998. A great start to the season with 6 straight victories underlined Rovers promotion credentials, particulary the away victory at fellow promotion contenders London Broncos. However, fate intervened and the Covid-19 pandemic brought an end to all professional sport for several months. When sport slowly resumed it was without paying spectators. Consequently, those teams in sports like Championship rugby league, without TV monies, thought it was just not financially possible to recommence with spectators in the ground. Rovers with the investment they had made in the team argued strongly the RFL should not have cancelled the season at the end of July but instead waited for further relaxing of the Covid-19 restrictions.
