Season 1936/37

Performances and gritty determination of Bill Sherwood

Rock bottom of the league again and serious questions were being asked about whether Featherstone Rovers would survive.  However, and somewhat miraculously, a small profit was recorded for the season, and with money owed only to the RFL there was no question the club would continue.  On the field there was little for fans to cheer with only 5 victories in all competitions, a record 21 game losing run and first round defeats in both cup competitions.  A surprise home victory over Huddersfield was greeted by jubilant scenes, however, reality struck a week later in the away fixture at Fartown when Rovers suffered a 61 - 14 defeat.

Captain Bill Sherwood showed a gritty resilience and no shortage of skill in leading the side, loanee fullback from Halifax  JJ Mills boosted performances at the end of the season and Vic Darlison showed lots of promise when he came into the side.  Centre Cyril Hammond also had a good year and headed the try scoring.   As the season ended Club President and founder George Johnson announced his retirement after 35 years involvement with the Featherstone Rovers.  The entire committee also resigned to try and allow for fresh leadership to take over.
