Season 1937/38

A range of new signings (Davies, Pollitt, Jack Evans, Butcher, Hughes, Moxon) provided some impetus for a better season. These were funded by the new 5000 shilling fund launched in the close season.  Whilst on paper finishing 4^th from bottom didn’t appear a big leap forward this was definitely a more competitive team and this in turn created a more positive feel about the club.  Both the top two teams in the league Leeds and Hunslet were given very hard games by Rovers at Post Office Road and escaped with narrow victories.  Attendances were up and the new management led by Abe Bullock could be pleased with the improvement made.  However, there was still no joy in the cup competitions with first round defeats at Bradford and Huddersfield.

Jim Pollitt proved an excellent signing at full back, Billy Davies showed some good touches as befitting a former England international and young Harold Moxon instantly showed his ability.  Bill Sherwood though was once again the outstanding player switching between loose forward and the centres as the team needed.  His absence through injury or suspension was always noticed.  Ralph Asquith also had a good year heading the try scoring.
