Season 1938/39

No players being sold!!

For the first time since Rovers became a senior club in 1921 there was no transfer income from the sale of players.  There were offers for some of the young players – Moxon, Hamer and Longley but these were all turned down.  The results on the field of this policy showed steady but not spectacular progress.  However, the result off the field was a big financial loss.  The season started very badly with a series of heavy defeats but as the season progressed things improved and 13 league wins was the best for many seasons.  After 10 years Featherstone finally made it into the second round of the Challenge Cup by beating Batley 3 – 0 at home but lost at Keighley in the second round.

A new childrens stand donated by Abraham Bullock was opened in time for the Yorkshire Cup tie with Leeds and other ground improvements meant the ground capacity was increased to 20,000.  Unfortunately attendances came nowhere near this level.  Sep Aspinall and Joe Golby proved the best of the new signings and 18 year old Albany Longley was an instant success. Pollitt, Pearson, Hemmingway, Asquith, Taylor and as ever Sherwood had good years.
