Season 1945/46

Storming 6 game unbeaten run to finish the season.

With the war over the rugby league was back to full strength with all clubs apart from St Helens Recs restarting.   The season started in fine fashion with Rovers challenging for the top four under the guidance of new coach Bill Sherwood.  Unfortunately injuries and loss of form hit during December, resulting in 9 straight defeats, which put paid to any top four ambitions.  But after this the team rallied well and finished the season showing their early season form with 6 successive wins.  In the victory over Castleford on 19 April part of the main stand collapsed but thankfully no one was seriously injured.  Overall, a mid-table finish with more victories than losses was satisfactory.  There was no joy, however, once again in the two cup competitions.

Ernie Wright’s form was such that he was selected for Yorkshire.  Moxon, Allman and Arthur Street were all in great form until injuries disrupted their seasons.  Frank Wagstaffe, newly signed from Castleford, established himself as the mainstay in the Rovers pack.  Scrum half Jack Higgins was developing into a very good player and attracting attention from other clubs.  Ominously Rovers did sell star centre Walt Tennant to Wakefield Trinity in March.
