Season 1948/49

Another disappointing season, whilst there was some improvement, Rovers still only managed 12 wins out of 41 games played and were seen as a guaranteed two points by the teams in the top half of the table.  There was some bad luck with injuries but overall the team was not just not good enough and this was compounded by continual changes in playing personnel.  Once again Walt Tennant stood out, scoring 15 tries in a struggling team was a great achievement, and his form was rewarded with selection for Yorkshire. In December, he was joined at the club by his younger brother Alan who was a record signing for a junior but was almost immediately called up for national service and made only 9 appearances.  This signing did signal that Rovers were now focusing on recruiting more local juniors, and importantly not selling at the first opportunity.

The season was not without its controversies.  Swinton complained bitterly about Rovers switching the order of their two legged Challenge Cup tie.  The RFL had to step in to resolve a dispute with Castleford over the transfer fee for Lister Mogg and Rovers were unhappy at fixtures clashes generated by Castleford rearranging games.
