Start the league campaign with only 3 wins in 13 games, then win 10 out of the next 11 games, lose at home in the challenge cup for the first time in over a decade and then see the league form slump again. Finish the season by just scraping into the top 16 play offs in 15th place, go away to 2nd place Wigan in the first round and win, go in the next round to Halifax and get well beaten. This was a confusing and ultimately very disappointing season. It’s hard to explain such inconsistency, and yes there were some injuries, but not as great as in previous years.
The poor form didn’t help gates with the home game against Doncaster on 20 March drawing only 565 spectators – a post war low. Despite the sale of Terry Clawson for £3,000 finances as ever were challenging. There were some positives. Skipper Don Fox added more records to his career with the club; Carl Dooler was a model of consistency; Terry Ramshaw and Arnie Morgan continued to develop into top class players and youngsters Les Tonks and Mick Smith established themselves in the first team.
