Season Summary

For the first time in their history Rovers spent big.  Leo Casey, Ikram Butt and Owen Simpson were signed for a total of £180,000, and Brendon Tuuta and Clarry Iti were brought over from New Zealand.  When added to the purchases of Gary Rose and Terry Manning the previous year, in meant Rovers had spent £260,000 in the transfer market.

However, this spending didn’t result in an improved league position.  The side looked great in possession, and could score lots of points, with the likes of Deryck Fox, Chris Bibb, Paul Newlove, Ian Smales, Martin Pearson and Owen Simpson all scoring more than 10 tries each.  Unfortunately in defence, particularly in the forwards, Rovers struggled and conceded lots of points.  The result was an inconsistent and slightly disappointing season, with an 8th place finish but Rovers never looked in danger of being relegated.  Having made the top 8 play offs, Rovers pulled off a shock in the first round by beating champions Wigan at Central Park 31–26 but couldn’t repeat the feat at Widnes in the next round and were beaten 42-28. 

The cup competitions were a major disappointment losing in the early rounds in all three.
