The season started with the new coach John Dorahy failing to turn up and star scrum half Deryck Fox staying away. The club lost patience with Dorahy and Steve Martin became the clubs first Australian coach. Fox was eventually transferred to Bradford. In one of the dafter decisions made by rugby league, the second division was reduced to only 8 teams who played each other 4 times. This proved a tedious format for fans though Rovers were very pleased that attendances were some 25% higher than they had forecast. Resplendent in a bright orange (tango) away kit, and equally bright blue and orange home combo, the league was a relatively straight forward stroll. Barring the odd blemish Rovers finished top with a team that was clearly too good for the division. In the cups, Rovers went out to St Helens in both the Regal Trophy and Challenge Cup, and Wakefield in the Yorkshire Cup. However, all three games were closely contested and again demonstrated Rovers first division credentials.
Rovers qualified for the end of season premiership final at Old Trafford and narrowly beat third division Workington Town in an entertaining game. Paul Newlove was man of the match in this game and helped himself to 48 tries over the season – a club record which still stands today.
