Despite strenuous efforts Rovers could not hold on to Paul Newlove. To replace him they signed Andy Currier, a proven top level centre. However, in a wretched piece of luck he damaged his cruciate ligament in a pre-season game and didn’t play a match all season. Rovers had more luck though with other new signings Steve Molloy, Carl Gibson, Gary H.Price, Matt Calland and Iva Ropati. The team was good enough and had some notable home wins over Wigan and Leeds but away form was slightly disappointing. A top 8 place looked assured at one point but a poor finish to the season, in part due to injuries to key players, saw Rovers eventually finish in 11th place. With the Yorkshire Cup consigned to history, Rovers had a shocking first round defeat at London Crusaders in the Regal Trophy and went out away at Wigan in the third round of the Challenge Cup. Overall, not bad for a promoted side but many fans thought the team had slightly underperformed.
Steve Molloy had a great year leading the pack and was selected for Great Britain. Martin Pearson topped the try and goal scoring and also gained international selection on the back of his form, playing his part in a successful GB sevens team in Australia.
