Victory over Huddersfield in Yorkshire Cup at Fartown

By far the brightest period in an otherwise very disappointing season was that during which Featherstone were fighting for the Yorkshire Cup.   In the first round Rovers defeated Bramley and then came a stunning victory at Huddersfield who were unbeaten at the time, and would go on win the championship.  Beating local rivals Castleford in the semi-final was doubly pleasing.  In the final itself Rovers had most of the play but lost 5-0 to Leeds due to a fortuitous try.  The final itself was switched from Huddersfield to Wakefield to allow more fans to attend given the extreme levels of poverty in Featherstone.

League form was dreadful and a heavy defeat at home by St Helens Rec in the Challenge Cup added to the gloom.  There was no obvious explanation why the squad, which was basically the same as that which made the Championship final the year, before performed so poorly.  Charlie Annable was one player who’s form was good enough for him to make his Yorkshire debut.  Tommy Askin suffered injury woes after a successful GB tour and was transferred to Leeds in January for £800.  This at least helped the financial position as Rovers had the lowest gate receipts in the entire league.
