Featherstone Rovers were pushed all the way in Andy Hay’s first game in charge by a well organised Workington Town side that were still in the hunt for a draw right up until Jack Bussey’s last minute individual try. There was never more than one score between the sides until the 54th minute when Ian Hardman eased Featherstone’s nerves to touch down. When Rovers then scored the try of the game they appeared to be clear of danger. Wingman Will Sharp was under immense pressure as he retrieved a kick behind his own line, but after stepping past the chasers he broke through the 2nd line of defence to race 60 metres before passing to the supporting Bussey who was tackled 15 metres short. The quick thinking utility man regained his feet for a quick play the ball, which was moved through quick hands all the way from left to right for James Mendeika to take advantage of the overlap and force his way over.

The first half was an evenly fought contest, With Rovers taking an early lead through an individual effort from Moore, cancelled out by Brett Phillips’ try. Debutant Kyle Trout put Rovers back in front, showing remarkable stepping ability for a prop forward, before the Town half-backs brought their side level and then into a  well-deserved lead. Forber’s crossfield kick was gathered by Stack for his first score, and minutes later Lupton’s cut-out pass put Kayle Connor in at the corner. The lead soon changed hands again when Ben Hellewell forced his way over after good work by Briggs and Worthington, and Rovers entered the break with a slim 16-14 advantage, which kept the game finally balanced until Hardman and Mendeika stretched the lead to give the gallant visitors little time in which to launch their fightback.
