YORK BEAT FEATHERSTONE ROVERS BY A MARGIN OF FIVE POINTS

York signalled the opening of their campaign by obtaining a 10 points to 5 points victory at the expense of Featherstone Rovers, whom they entertained at Clarence Street. However, they had to fight hard, for Featherstone held their end up splendidly, and were hardly five points a poorer side than York.

The first half of the game found York very much in the ascendant, and most of the play took place in the Rovers half. Featherstone held their own in the scrummages, but they were beaten for the ball in most cases, thanks to the excellent "hooking" of Dooler.   As the result of a brilliant run by Farrar, Short was able to get over the Rovers line, for Owens to convert.  Owens also landed goal from a penalty awarded against Kirkham for failing to play the ball. The struggle was much more stern in the second half, and five minutes before whistle sounded there had been no further score. It was then that J. Denton, who had scored the Rovers only points by kicking penalty goal in the first half, was able to take advantage of a mis-kick by Owens, and go on to score a brilliant try.  Wynard failed to convert, and immediately York made a lightning rush for the Featherstone line. Daggs managed to score near the corner flag just on time, Owens failing with the goal kick.
