CLEVER TACKLING Plays Big Part in Featherstone’s Win.

Featherstone Rovers gained a great victory in their first home match at Hunslet’s expense. Three thousand spectators saw a bustling and interesting if not very scientific game.  Hunslet were beaten chiefly in the forwards. Higson led off with a try against his old club, and a lovely try by Hirst and goal points by James Denton made Featherstone’s score eight points at half-time. Against this all Hunslet could do was a great penalty goal by Guerin.

The second half provided a rare tussle, and with a try by Walker, not converted, and another penalty from Guerin, Hunslet came within a point, of Featherstone. The Rovers, however, soon settled the issue.  Wynard forging his way over, surrounded by opponents, and James Denton, a little later, kicked a penalty goal. Featherstone certainly deserved their six-points margin if only by reason of the grand work of their forwards. They not only scrummaged well, but when the ball came out they brushed the Hunslet six aside time after time.

A great game was played Tait, the Featherstone new wing player. He is the right type, strong and fearless, and a great tackier.  James Denton and Hirst were also often in the picture, and Seymour played a good spotting game. Every Featherstone forward deserves high praise. The full-backs did their work well. Walker showed resource and pluck, and Hunslet’s half-backs worked untiringly behind thoroughly beaten forwards, of whom Guerin was the pick. Featherstone’s tackling all through was excellent.
