HUDDERSFIELD'S FINE VICTORY AT FEATHERSTONE

Featherstone Rovers got financial consolation for their first home defeat this season in the shape of gate receipts amounting to £281 10s.  The match with was witnessed by about 6.000 spectators, a good number of whom came with the visitors.  From start to finish the game teemed with interest, and a fast exhibition was just spoiled towards the end by tactics keener than necessary.

There was a sensational start. From the kick off Huddersfield took up a position a few yards from the Featherstone line, but thanks to infringement by Rogers the venue changed in a twinkling, and Kirkham was held about ten yards out.  He secured from the scrum, and darted over the line for a try. Denton converted.  Gronow, with a great individual effort, reduced the lead to two points after ten minutes' play, and his goal kick made the scores equal.  A dropped goal by James Williams gave the Rovers the lead once more, but Gronow sent Naylor over for a try, which he converted, and also added goal points to a try by Davidge. Thus Huddersfield were eight points up. The Rovers forwards stuck grimly to their work, and had their reward before the interval in Barraclough scoring a try. With the kick Wynard brought Featherstone within three points of Huddersfield's total.

The second half was evenly, if too keenly, contested, and on the play Featherstone deserved at least another try.  As it was they presented Leeming with a gift try which Gronow failed to convert.
