FEATHERSTONE’S HARD LUCK

Featherstone put up a big fight at St. Helens, especially in the second half, and were unlucky in not scoring a couple of tries. Playing with the wind they had the better of the first period, but lacked finishing power.  Hirst and James Denton had several chances, but were keenly watched by Hayes and Lewis; while on another occasion Crooks, at full back, saved luckily when Williams and Kirkham appeared certain to dribble over.

From the way the Featherstone forwards fought out the issue, it is easy to understand why they have a better record than St. Helens. Their strenuous work should have been rewarded; but the St. Helens tackling prevailed. Hirst, on one occasion, had wretched luck. Racing clear away from the centre he was only half tackled on the line, but unfortunately dropped the ball instead of grounding it. Then James Denton was unfortunate in not shaking off Flynn when going strongly for the corner late in the game.
