Abbey’s Advances Stopped at Featherstone

Featherstone finished their home League programme with a fine victory against York. They were without Hirst, Clements, Wynard, and Morgan, but the substitutes fitted in well, and the team played fine football.  All the scoring was confined to the first half, when Featherstone had the wind and slope in their favour. James and Sidney Denton and Gill scored the tries, all of them following clever openings made by the half backs, and finished with fine turns of speed by the actual scorers. James Denton converted two and kicked a penalty goal.

If there was not very much to chose between the forwards, there was a great difference in the work of the respective backs. About the only man on the York side to reach his best form was the diminutive Abbey, who broke through beautifully more than once in the second hall. There was, however, no combination in the third line. York played better in the second half than the first. Their attacking movements were mostly nipped in bud by the clever spotting and tackling of the Rovers.

Kirkham was the best half back on view, and Gill, the Dentons, Seymour, and Tait were often prominent for the winners. The Featherstone forwards were a virile six.
