After successive Grand final defeats to Toronto and Toulouse, Rovers recruited heavily for the 2022 season with the likes of Joey Leilua, Ryley Jacks and Jesse Sene-Lefao joining an already strong squad, and the experienced Brain McDermott appointed as coach. An early season win over title rivals Leigh raised hopes, but it soon became apparent that Leigh were on a massive recruitment drive that quickly brought results. Rovers’ season was then one of convincing wins punctuated by sound defeats to Leigh, at the Summer Bash, in the 1895 Cup final at Tottenham and in the league. The mid-season arrival of Mark Kheirallah and Johnathon Ford among others failed to raise the team to Leigh’s level. Injuries to key players such as Kheirallah and Bussey also proved costly. Despite securing second place and scoring over 1,00 points in the process, Rovers disappointingly failed to reach the Grand final, beaten at home by Batley in the semi-finals.
Notwithstanding the ultimate feeling of frustration, there were some stand-out contributions to enjoy from Junior Moors, the prolific Craig Hall, Connor Jones, Morgan Smith and others.
