Season 1924/25

Five game unbeaten run over the xmas period

Whilst Rovers finished in the bottom half of the league there was a definite improvement in the performance of the team.  There was a notable five game unbeaten run over the xmas period which included wins on the 25^th, 26^th and 27^th of December.  In part the improvement, was due to the injection of young local talent into the team – George Goldie, Tommy Askin and Charlie Annable, the latter in particular having a great first season in the scrum half role.  In the Challenge Cup Rovers made the third round for the first time as a senior club before losing to eventual winners Oldham at the Watersheddings.  In the first round Rovers needed three games to beat Halifax after two draws (0-0 and 2-2), Rovers eventually triumphed 6-2 at Headingley.  Over the three games no try was scored!

Jim Denton had a great year topping both the try scoring and goal kicking and making his debut for Yorkshire.  His brother Sid and Jack Hirst also performed well.  The strength of the team though was the pack where Ernie Barraclough was prominent and gained county selection. Chairman George Johnson moved out of Featherstone but thankfully returned shortly after the season ended.
