Season 1921/22

Winning first ever game as a senior club at Bradford on 27 August 1921

After exactly one minute Rovers secured their first points as a senior league club.  Jimmy Williams coolly kicked a drop goal from near the half way line as Rovers went on to victory in that first ever game at Bradford on 27 August 1921.  Over 500 Featherstone fans made the journey.  Such a promising start was immediately brought into perspective, however, when the next fixture brought a 42 - 3 defeat at Leeds and the first home match at Post Office Road also resulted in further disappointment with a 21 - 7 defeat by Hull.  It was a tough first season for the league newcomers, winning 10 of 36 games, and finishing third bottom of the league.  However, they ran many teams close and were unlucky in several games.  Overall, there were promising signs the players were adapting to the higher standard of football and better results would come.

The ground was improved by “banking up” to provide capacity for 15,000 and new changing rooms were constructed. The team had also been strengthened by the additions of Higson, Hepworth, Jones and Kirkham but the bulk of the side remained those players who had performed well in junior football.  The forwards were not often bettered as a unit and in the backs the stand out players were Jack Hirst who showed his qualities and Billy Seymour who had a good season in the vital full-back position.

The Featherstone public did their bit with home gates averaging 3,500 despite a mediocre season.
